Synthetic oil seems to stay where it is put better. Seems I had to rub as hard with or without them. You could buy some of those fancy degrease sprays if you wish.
If they seemed to need a bit more, I used just plain Vaseline. I took all the parts off and cleaned the old grease off with alcohol and then oiled them up with synthetic oil. This shortness allows the diamond to track nicely and also allows that 1/2 gram of weight to work correctly. Empire cartridges are short and are compliant with the zero tonearm. The tonearm on the Zero works best when the tonearm is level when the diamond is on the surface of the lp. Another factor in picking a cartridge is how tall it is from top to diamond. Not sure about the Shure setup but if you want newer equipment, that is your choice. This I have found to be true by experience. With the 1/2 gram stylus weight, the stylus should last around 1000 hours. These original Empire styli turn up on e-Bay often enough that once you have a cartridge you will be set to go with several styli in your pocket. The Empire 888 TE and VE can function well down to a 1/2 gram stylus force weight. I know it is sort of a guess but without that tool? Perfect alignment would mean that the diamond would be traveling as close to what Garrard called zero tracking error. Without the alignment tool you must eyeball the diamond to be directly under the center of the pivot point above. PM me and I will give you a good lead on the cartridges mentioned and more info if you need it. If you want a brand new cartridge and stylus, I can not help at all. All are from about 1970, near the time your machine was made. These model cartridges require very small stylus force weights and comply well with tonearm on the zero. The 1000 ZE/X would be the smallest diamond and would play quad lps. Specifically, the 888 TE or 888 VE are especially compliant with your machine.
I have found thru experience that Empire vintage cartridges and styli work the best with the zero 100s. I suppose you could order one from the factory installed, possibly? That would be the way it was here in the US. You would pick one out at the store that carried the Garrard's. These machines did not come with a cartridge or stylus.
